May 5 (Renewables Now) – US power utility CenterPoint Energy Inc (NYSE:CNP) on Wednesday said it has secured regulatory clearance to sign off-take deals for 335 MW of solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity in Indiana.

The permission by the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC) was granted to the company’s subsidiary CenterPoint Energy Indiana South and concerns two power purchase agreements (PPAs). The contracts will support CenterPoint Energy’s renewables commitment and its 2035 net-zero goal for Scope 1 emissions, both part of its long-term electric generation transition plan.

Under the first arrangement, the utility will ink a 15-year deal to buy 185 MW of solar power from a project being developed by Pittsburgh-based developer Oriden, which is part of Mitsubishi Power Americas. The solar farm will be installed in Vermillion County. The second PPA calls for the purchase of 150 MW of solar power from solar and energy storage developer Origis Energy. The contract, with a term of 20 years, is tied to a project in Knox County.

The total contracted power volume is equal to the electricity demand of more than 70,000 homes.

CenterPoint Energy supplies electricity to about 150,000 customers in southwest Indiana.
